Core concept

TOTP means Time-based One-Time Password. It is a temporary authentication value calculated from a shared secret and the current time.

How it works

RFC 6238 defines TOTP as a time-based extension of HOTP. Time is divided into steps, so a new moving factor produces a new code when the step changes.

Settings that must match

The generator and provider need the same secret and matching configuration. A password, recovery code or previous six-digit code cannot replace the TOTP secret.

Common mistakes to avoid

TOTP calculation itself does not require a network request. An authenticator can calculate the current value from its secret, configuration and clock.

Security and recovery

Treat the shared secret as sensitive authentication material. Anyone who obtains it may be able to calculate future codes.

Standards note: Technical explanations follow RFC 6238 and, where relevant, RFC 4226. Always follow your account provider's configuration and recovery instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Can a TOTP generator bypass 2FA?

No. It needs the correct shared secret and matching settings.

Does TOTP depend on the device clock?

Yes. TOTP uses time as part of its moving factor, so significant clock disagreement can cause rejection.

Should I share my TOTP secret?

No. Treat the shared secret as sensitive authentication material.
