For US passport online renewal, use the Department of State's current digital-photo instructions rather than a generic “passport photo digital requirements” chart. The current page requests an original, unedited color photograph and lists JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC, and HEIF formats, with a file size between 54 KB and 10 MB.
The application provides positioning and cropping controls. Do not automatically turn your original into a 600 × 600 JPEG under 240 KB: those numbers come from a different visa-photo workflow.
The renewal rules are a separate workflow
A printed passport photograph has a physical size. A visa upload has its own digital specification. Online renewal asks you to start with the original file and then work inside the official application.
| Application | What this guide distinguishes |
|---|---|
| Printed US passport application | A physical two-inch-square photograph |
| Relevant US visa digital application | Application-specific square JPEG and file-size requirements |
| US passport online renewal | Original digital image and the renewal portal's photo workflow |
The official renewal page reviewed for this guide does not state the general visa page's 600–1,200 pixel range as a renewal requirement. This article does not invent a different mandatory pixel range. Follow the current renewal page and the actual portal instructions if they are updated.
Prepare the original without retouching it
Take a recent photograph with the required plain background, appropriate lighting, and a clear front-facing view. Keep the camera file. Do not apply filters, replace the background, reshape facial features, or submit a photograph of a paper print.
If the source has a serious capture problem, take another picture. Editing a shadow away or synthesizing missing hair changes the image rather than producing the original photograph requested by the workflow.
The background guide helps you set up the scene. Its suggestions concern the real background and lighting, not digital reconstruction.
Check the file you actually have
Open the file information and verify its format and size. A thumbnail, screenshot, or messaging attachment can differ from the camera original. If you use cloud photo storage, retrieve the actual original before selecting it for the application.
HEIC is not automatically a reason to convert. The current official renewal page explicitly includes HEIC and HEIF. Keep that distinction in mind when reading older articles or pages aimed at a different government form.
A file below the minimum size may be a reduced copy. Retrieve the original instead of adding empty data to reach a byte threshold. If the file is above the stated maximum, follow the current portal guidance or take a suitable new original rather than assuming arbitrary compression is acceptable.
Use the government's upload and positioning process
- Review the current official renewal-photo page and confirm that online renewal is the application route you are using.
- Choose the original file from the device you are using for the application.
- Use the portal's own photo positioning or cropping controls as instructed.
- Read any validation message and respond to the actual problem identified.
- Continue only after reviewing the selected photograph and the application's instructions.
This sequence describes the photo step, not a determination that you qualify for online renewal. Eligibility and application processing are handled by the government.
The portal's basic photo check is not the same as final human acceptance. The official instructions explain that a later review can still identify a problem and request a different photograph.
Where ToolNivo fits—and where it does not
The Passport Photo Maker workspace includes a separate online renewal mode for an original-file check. It deliberately does not produce an edited renewal download. The browser workspace still previews only its supported JPG, PNG, and WebP inputs, so it cannot preview every format listed by the renewal authority.
In particular, WebP support in an editor does not make WebP an accepted renewal format. Conversely, a HEIC original that the workspace cannot preview may be accepted by the government application. The receiving application's rules control the submission.
You do not need to pass through ToolNivo before submitting a supported original to the official portal. Use the tool only where it helps you understand the file, and retain the original regardless.
Troubleshoot without applying visa rules
The portal cannot find the file
Check whether the original is downloaded to the device and whether the file picker is looking in the right location. Do not substitute a screenshot simply because it is easier to find.
The image is the wrong format
Confirm the actual file type against the current renewal list. A filename extension alone does not prove the encoding. If it is a camera format outside the list, consult the official instructions for an appropriate original capture.
The photograph is visually unsuitable
Retake for shadows, blur, missing head area, or an unsuitable background. A smaller file will not fix those issues.
An online article says the maximum is 240 KB
Check which application that article covers. Our visa photo requirements guide explains that separate route.
Frequently asked questions
Does online renewal accept iPhone HEIC photos?
The current official list includes HEIC and HEIF. The photo must also satisfy the remaining requirements; format alone is not enough.
Can I scan my old passport photo?
The renewal instructions say not to use a scan or photograph of a printed image. Use an appropriate original digital photograph.
Must I crop it to two inches before uploading?
Do not apply a printed-photo workflow automatically. Use the original and follow the renewal portal's positioning controls.
Does passing the upload check guarantee approval?
No. A later review can still identify a photo problem. Follow any official request for a replacement.
Keep the original, verify the current renewal instructions, and use the official portal for submission. Device-specific file handling is covered in our iPhone guide.
