Create a passport photo print sheet

A passport photo 4x6 template is a layout of smaller photographs on a four-by-six-inch sheet. It is not the size of the individual passport photo. Each US printed passport photo must remain two inches square after the sheet has been printed and cut.

ToolNivo's print-sheet option creates a PDF with physical dimensions. Its safe margins and gaps deliberately leave room around the photographs. That means its layout does not squeeze six two-inch photos onto every 4 × 6 sheet.

Why six photos fit on paper but not inside safe margins

A four-inch width can theoretically hold two two-inch photos, and a six-inch height can hold three. That arithmetic uses every part of the sheet. It leaves no room for margins, spacing, crop marks, printer limitations, or cutting tolerance.

The ToolNivo layout uses 4 mm outer safety margins and 2 mm gaps between photographs. On 101.6 × 152.4 mm paper, the available inner width is 93.6 mm. Two 50.8 mm photographs plus a gap would require 103.6 mm, so they do not fit across. The current safe layout fits one column and two rows: two copies.

This is an intentional physical-size choice. Shrinking each photo slightly to advertise six copies would defeat the purpose of a passport print sheet. A different edge-to-edge layout can have different copy counts, but it must be checked against the printer's actual capabilities.

Choose the exact paper, not a similar label

The two small paper formats are close, but not identical. Letting a print program fit one onto the other can change the dimensions of every photo on the sheet. Match the PDF page size, printer setting, and actual paper.

Create a 4 × 6 sheet in ToolNivo

  1. Open the passport print-sheet workspace and select a supported source image.
  2. Choose the US printed 2 × 2 inch preset. Review the face and background before making copies.
  3. Keep the default printed pixel width unless you have a specific reason to change it. More pixels cannot restore a blurry source.
  4. Select US 4 × 6 inches in the print-paper control.
  5. Choose how many copies to include. Zero means fill the available layout; the requested number cannot exceed the number that fits.
  6. Enable crop marks if useful, create the downloads, and save the PDF print sheet.

The single-photo JPG download is a separate file. It is not a JPEG version of the whole 4 × 6 sheet. Do not rename the PDF to .jpg or upload the single square image expecting a retailer to arrange multiple copies automatically.

Check the PDF before printing

Open the PDF in a viewer that shows page dimensions. The page should be 4 × 6 inches, and the photograph should remain square. Inspect the image itself as well as the sheet layout: a correctly sized rectangle can contain an unsuitable portrait.

The crop marks are cutting aids, not an official border or a government compliance label. Keep them outside the final cut photograph. If your printer clips outer marks, measure the actual photo rectangle rather than guessing the cut from a partial mark.

Select the matching paper size and Actual size or 100% in the print dialog. Turn off Fit to page, Fill page, or other enlargement settings. Some borderless modes enlarge the image slightly to avoid white edges; inspect the driver settings and measure a sample.

Measure the first printed photo before cutting all copies. If a two-inch rectangle becomes 1.9 inches, the problem is scaling, not the number of pixels in the JPEG. The home-printing troubleshooting guide explains how to separate driver scaling from other problems.

Can I send the sheet to a store?

Ask the specific service whether it accepts a PDF at exact physical size on suitable photographic paper. Ordinary online photo uploaders often expect an image file, and a document-print service accepting PDFs does not automatically mean it produces passport-suitable photographs.

ToolNivo does not submit retail orders or guarantee that a kiosk will honor the PDF page dimensions. If the provider only accepts a single-image upload and offers automatic cropping, confirm the workflow before paying. A dedicated in-store passport service may be the simpler choice.

For metric sheets, see the existing 10 × 15 cm printing walkthrough. Use the page that matches your paper rather than trying to adapt it with an automatic fit setting.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my ToolNivo sheet show only two copies?

The current layout preserves two-inch photographs with safety margins and gaps. Two columns would not fit inside those margins on four-inch-wide paper.

Can I print a 4 × 6 PDF on Letter paper?

It may be possible to place it at actual size on larger paper, but avoid automatic enlargement. Confirm the photo dimensions on a sample. Selecting matching paper is easier to verify.

Does the sheet guarantee passport acceptance?

No. It controls the layout. Your photograph must separately meet the appearance and composition requirements, and the authority makes the acceptance decision.

A useful template protects the individual photograph's size. Choose the correct paper, preserve the scale, and measure before cutting.
