ATS-Friendly Resume Template: A Clear PDF Checklist

An ATS-friendly resume template aims to keep your information straightforward to read and extract. It cannot guarantee an interview or control how every recruitment system handles a file. ToolNivo's ATS Simple layout focuses on a single text column, standard headings and selectable PDF text.

What ATS Simple changes

The template removes the sidebar arrangement used by the Modern and Creative designs. Contact details appear in the main text flow, followed by the sections in your chosen order. The document does not use skill-percentage graphics, decorative icons or a profile photo.

If you added a photo before switching templates, it stays in the editor's data and returns when you select another layout. It is intentionally omitted from the ATS Simple PDF. This avoids putting essential identity information inside an image while keeping your design options available.

Use headings that explain the content

Keep recognizable labels such as Work Experience, Education, Skills and Languages. A custom section can be useful, but give it a specific name that matches the material it contains. “Selected Projects” is clearer than a heading that does not describe its contents.

Within each experience entry, separate the job title, organization and dates. Put the responsibilities in the description rather than hiding important details inside a graphic. The same principle applies to qualifications: use the actual qualification and institution names.

Match relevant wording without stuffing keywords

If a vacancy asks for a tool you genuinely use, name that tool in the appropriate skill or experience entry. “Microsoft Excel” is more precise than “computer skills” when that is what your work involved. Explain the relevant task as well, so the document remains meaningful to a person.

Do not paste the entire job advertisement into the CV or claim skills you do not have. A clear factual description is useful whether the next reader is a recruiter or software extracting fields. ToolNivo does not analyze the vacancy or calculate a match score.

A practical PDF check

  1. Download the ATS Simple version after checking all visible sections.
  2. Open the PDF and try selecting your name and a line of experience.
  3. Copy a short passage into a plain-text editor and check that the words remain readable.
  4. Confirm that email and web links point to the intended addresses.
  5. If the application portal fills fields from your upload, review and correct those fields before submitting.

Copying text is a useful basic check, not a complete ATS simulation. Recruitment systems can differ. Always follow the file-format and application instructions provided by the employer.

Know the limits of the template

The PDF contains embedded fonts and real text for supported characters, including the Latin characters tested in English, French, Spanish, German and Portuguese. Arabic/RTL is not supported in this version, and unsupported characters produce an error rather than silently disappearing.

A plain layout does not fix unclear writing or missing qualifications. Review the content, keep your dates accurate and choose details that support your application. ToolNivo offers a formatting option, not a claim of “100% ATS compatibility” or guaranteed selection.
